Historical train carriages at the Downpatrick and County Down Railway museum in County Down were damaged in an act of vandalism, which police are investigating.

The vandalism reportedly occurred on the afternoon of Friday, September 20, at the Market Street location of the museum.

The PSNI described the damage as “wanton” and expressed concern for the volunteers who work hard to maintain the museum and serve the community.

The museum announced that repairs to the damaged carriages will cost “thousands of pounds,” and the volunteers are disheartened by this setback following previous restoration efforts from last year’s flood damage.
