Tánaiste Micheál Martin officially opened the €215m upgrade of the Dunkettle Interchange in Cork.
The upgrade has already resulted in a 50pc reduction in journey times during peak hours.
The Dunkettle Interchange Upgrade Scheme is seen as a significant investment in Cork’s future and a crucial link in the region’s transport network.
It is expected to boost economic and social activity in Cork and the Munster region.
The upgrade was completed on time and within budget despite challenges posed by the pandemic, Brexit, and the war in Ukraine.
The interchange is located at the junction of four major national roads.
The project included the construction of new road links, bridge structures, and upgrades to existing structures.
It also features new walkways, cycleways, and intelligent transport systems.
The project was complex due to the need to work around live traffic and rail traffic.
The scheme includes a three-year maintenance period until 2027, focusing on monitoring traffic flows and environmental management.
