EasyJet has opened its first English base in 12 years at Birmingham Airport, aiming to bring down fares through increased competition.

The airline is basing three planes at the airport, creating 140 jobs for pilots and crew.

The new base will operate on 16 new routes, including destinations like Antalya, Kos, and Sharm el Sheikh.

EasyJet will also increase frequencies on existing routes from Birmingham, adding more than 50pc additional flights each week.

CEO Johan Lundgren highlighted the enhanced connectivity for both holiday and business travellers.

The base opening was celebrated with a mural by street artist Gent 48 featuring figures like Ozzy Osbourne and Benjamin Zephaniah to represent Birmingham’s culture.
