England’s roll out of electronic visa begins Nov 15 with Qatari citizens (and YES, it applies to transit passengers)

The phased roll-out of Britain’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) wil begin with nationals from Qatar on November 15, 2023, and will continue to include additional nationalities in the coming years.

The application fee is £10, and successful applications will take up to three days to process. Transfer passengers through Heathrow en route to and from Ireland will need the ERTA, but not Irish nationals.

The ETA will apply to foreign nationals from Europe, North America, and other countries who currently don’t need a visa to travel to Britain.

A similar scheme, ETIAS, is being introduced for the Shenghen region of Europe in 2025,  which will not apply to Irish passport holders but will to the British.
