Arthur Frommer, a pioneer in budget travel, has died at the age of 95. Mr Frommer revolutionised how Americans approached leisure travel, beginning with his influential guidebook “Europe on 5 Dollars a Day.”

His travel philosophy encouraged travellers to seek authentic experiences through budget accommodations and local dining, rather than luxury options.

Frommer’s contributions to the travel industry included self-publishing, creating a strong brand presence, and influencing a generation of travellers with practical advice.

He remained active in the travel sector until his death at 95, promoting budget travel principles and critiquing modern travel practices through various media platforms.

To the end of his life, he said he avoided traveling businesst class. “I fly economy class and I try to experience the same form of travel, the same experience that the average American and the average citizen of the world encounters.”
