Eurowings has revealed plans to potentially expand its Boeing 737-8 MAX fleet by exercising options for 60 additional aircraft, alongside 40 firm orders.

The €4.6bn order, allocated in January 2025, will replace 28 Airbus A319s and older A320s, with deliveries starting in 2027. The 737-8 MAX, seating 189 passengers, offers 30pc lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, aligning with EU environmental regulations.

The expansion aims to strengthen Eurowings’ position in Europe’s short- and medium-haul markets from hubs in Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, and Hamburg. Industry reports indicate active discussions on the additional 60 aircraft amid rising demand and fuel costs.

Jens Bischof shared: “Economic success makes Eurowings attractive for investment. At the same time, we have a responsibility to reconcile economic and ecological topics. With 40 state-of-the-art aircraft, we are laying the foundations for a successful Eurowings future that is geared towards ambitious sustainability goals.”

Carsten Spohr shared: “This is a well-deserved and strong signal for a successful future.”
