The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has tightened airspace rules around Washington National (DCA) following a crash involving a CRJ700 and a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter on January 29, 2025.
New regulations will cause runway closures at DCA during President Trump’s helicopter flights, leading to additional traffic restrictions.
The FAA has mandated radar separation for helicopters and aircraft, requiring 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometres) of lateral distance or 500 feet (152.4 metres) of altitude separation.
The crash resulted in the loss of all 67 individuals on board both aircraft, marking the first major US commercial passenger flight crash since 2009.
