The government of Fiji has approved the adoption of an open skies policy during an April 9 cabinet meeting in Suva following a review of the National Aviation Policy.
Approvals for open skies agreements will be granted on a case-by-case basis, considering economic, strategic, and operational factors.
Fiji Airways CEO Andre Viljoen presented at the meeting, and negotiations are set to begin with the US for an open skies framework to expand direct services between Fiji and new US destinations.
Fiji has existing bilateral air service agreements, including with the US, allowing Fijian operators to serve various routes in the Pacific, Asia, and the US under the current agreement amended in 1996.
