Frankfurt airport trials walk-through scanners

Frankfurt airport has introduced a trial of a new walk-through scanner technology to expedite security checks.

Stefan Schulte CEO of Frankfurt Airport

The scanner, called Rohde & Schwarz R&S QPS Walk2000, allows passengers to walk through it at normal pace without stopping.

The scanner uses millimetre-wave technology and AI-based detection software to identify metallic and non-metallic objects, eliminating the need to remove jackets and coats.

Anomalies are displayed in real time on a unisex avatar, reducing the need for follow-up checks and enabling security staff to focus on specific areas instead of patting down the passenger.

The trial is being conducted in the Schengen Concourse A of Terminal 1 due to its high footfall, with the aim of comparing the new technology with the existing scanners currently in use at the airport. The German Federal Police will ultimately decide whether to approve its use for regular operations.
