Tánaiste Simon Harris is claiming that the Government “never suggested” that short-term lets were the cause of Ireland’s low rental supply, in response to an ESRI report saying that government measures to remove short term lets form the market would have a negligible effect on housing supply.

Before the publication of the ESRI report, the Government had claimed that introducing regulations on short-term letting platforms like Airbnb, would lead to 12,000 properties entering the long-term rental market.

The ESRI research found “no correlation” between short-term lets and long-term tenancy reductions, while noting potential “detrimental impacts” in specific areas.
