Historic arrow ceremony revives tradition at Hook Lighthouse

The ancient Arrow Ceremony has taken place at Hook Lighthouse in County Wexford. Dunbrody Archers join local officials to shoot biodegradable arrows into the sea, symbolising historical port authority. This centuries-old custom revives maritime heritage at one of the world’s oldest operating lighthouses.

The event traces its history back to 1687 when New Ross authorities asserted jurisdiction over surrounding waters. Hundreds of participants gathered at the 800-year-old tower for the evocative ritual. Public attendance encourages engagement with the site’s history.

After the ceremony, visitors explored the lighthouse with its 115 steps offering panoramic views. The event promotes Hook Lighthouse as a year-round heritage attraction.
