This Christmas season, Ireland is experiencing its busiest travel period in over a decade, with 2.5m on the road or in the air by various modes of transport.

Dublin Airport expects to accommodate over 1.4m passengers, peaking on December 22/23, amidst significant demand and high ticket prices due to the passenger cap. A grounding of all aircraft by American Airlines on Christmas Eve in the USA was solved within an hour.

Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority are emphasising road safety with campaigns urging safe travel practices and vehicle checks, particularly as travel chaos and adverse weather conditions occur. A total of 235 people have died on Irish roads so far this year, 171 in the twenty six counties,  nine fewer than for the same period in 2023 and 64 in the six counties.

Bus Éireann said it expects to handle 500,000 passengers from December 21.

Strong passenger numbers are noted across all modes of transport, with additional services provided to meet the increased demand for holiday travel.
