The 42nd ICAO Assembly in September 2025 will focus on CORSIA’s role in aviation decarbonisation. A key challenge is the limited supply of Eligible Emissions Units (EEUs), hindering airlines’ ability to meet CORSIA obligations.

CORSIA requires airlines to offset emissions above 85pc of 2019 levels by purchasing emissions units or using CORSIA-eligible fuels.

States must support CORSIA by ensuring sufficient EEU supply to enable airlines to comply with the global standard.

CORSIA supports climate finance, certifiable emission reductions, Paris Agreement commitments, and socio-economic benefits.

Marie Owens Thomsen shared: “Taking advantage of CORSIA to create a win-win-win-win situation should be a no-brainer. The key message from the airline industry to the ICAO Assembly is that following a ‘global standard’ approach is the only way to solve the net zero carbon emissions challenge.”
