India’s IndiGo Airlines has taken delivery of its first A321-200NY(XLR) aircraft, marking the start of 40 ordered from Airbus. The plane, registered VT-NLA, ferried from Hamburg Finkenwerder via Abu Dhabi to Delhi on January 6-7, 2026. Configured with 12 business class seats and 183 economy seats, it uses CFM International LEAP-1A33B2 engines.
Eight more units are expected by the end of 2026. The airline plans to deploy the type on long-haul routes too thin for its upcoming A350-900s. Debut services include Mumbai and Delhi to Athens starting January 23 and 24.
Potential destinations also cover Denpasar and Istanbul Airport. IndiGo’s fleet includes 26 A320-200s, 180 A320-200Ns, three A321-200(P2F)s, 167 A321-200NX, and 47 ATR72-600s. The expansion targets growth in international operations.
IndiGo Airlines shared in a written statement “IndiGo Airlines expects a further eight units of the type by the end of 2026.”
“The airline will use the XLRs to expand its long-haul footprint on routes too thin for its forthcoming A350-900s.”
