IranAir is pursuing legal action against EU sanctions, which were imposed in October 2024, claiming no evidence supports allegations of the airline’s involvement in weapon transfers to Russia.
The General Court of the European Union dismissed IranAir’s request for interim relief in August 2025, with the ongoing lawsuit’s outcome still pending.
EU sanctions currently prohibit IranAir from operating to the EU, purchasing goods or services from the bloc, or cooperating with EU entities.
To counter restrictions, IranAir plans to increase flights to Pakistan and explore expansion opportunities in Tunisia.
The Central Bank of Iran reported IranAir as its third-largest debtor, with liabilities of €8.6m at the end of 2024.
Seyed Hamidreza Sanei shared: “The imposition of sanctions against IranAir was without evidence. The sanctions were imposed under the framework related to Russia, but the claim that IranAir played a role in the transfer of weapons to Russia is completely false.”
