JAL – Japan Airlines announced an order for 42 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus, including twenty-one A350-900s, eleven A321-200Ns, and ten B787-9s, to enhance and expand international operations focusing on growth regions like North America, Asia, and India.
The acquisition ends Boeing’s status as the sole provider of narrowbody aircraft for JAL, with plans to use twenty of the A350-900s on international routes, aiming to grow the international network by 40% by 2030.
Japan Airlines will gradually introduce the new A350s and B787s over six years starting in FY2027, with the existing B737-8s replacing B737-800s on domestic routes and the A321neos updating the B767 fleet.
The airline plans to strategically deploy the newly ordered aircraft on routes aligning with demand, including Haneda Airport, following the loss of an A350-900 in January 2024, with the addition of one A350-900 in a domestic configuration as a replacement.
