In 2024, the Irish Passport Service issued over one million passports, the centenary of the document.

January was notably the busiest month with a record 123,000 applications, peaking on January 28th with 8,363 submissions. This goes against the trend pre-pandemic when June and July wee the peak months.

The Passport Service anticipates issuing around 940,000 passports in 2025 and encourages citizens to plan for travel by checking passport expiry dates.

Micheal Martin shared: “In its 100th year, the Passport Service managed an extraordinary volume of applications, delivering over one million passports for the second time ever. This remarkable level of service speaks to the dedication, efficiency, and commitment of the team. Despite the surge in demand, the Passport Service successfully met or exceeded its service delivery targets, ensuring minimal delays across the board. Next year is set to be another busy year for the Passport Service. I encourage everyone planning to travel to check their passport’s expiry date now. If you need to renew or apply for the first time, I strongly recommend using Passport Online – the quickest, easiest, and most cost-effective way to secure your passport.”
