Japan has raised visa fees fivefold, the first increase since 1978. Single entry visa fees rise from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000 from 1 July. Multi entry visas increase from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000.
The changes apply to all foreigners required to obtain a visa before entering Japan including travellers from China India the Philippines and much of the Middle East. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi cited inflation and exchange rate shifts as the primary justification. The existing fee structure no longer reflects the true administrative cost of issuing visas.
Japan’s foreign resident population reached a record 4.13 million at the end of 2025. The revisions form part of a wider immigration reform package. Travellers from 74 visa exempt countries and regions including Ireland, the US, England, Australia, Singapore Thailand South Korea Hong Kong remain unaffected by the fee increase.
