A temporary jet fuel shortage has affected operations at several Italian airports including Milan Linate as Air BP Italia reported limited availability of jet fuel between 02 April and 09 April 2026. The airports of Milan Linate, Venice, Treviso and Bologna issued notices to airlines that refuelling services for operators linked to Air BP Italia faced restrictions with priority allocated to ambulance flights, state flights and long-haul services lasting more than three hours. The situation arose amid a sharp rise in jet fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions and a delayed cargo delivery that impacted supplies from the British company.
Local alternative suppliers stepped in to resolve the temporary gap and prevented major disruptions to flight schedules at the four northern Italian airports. Airlines received advisories that rationing measures applied until at least 09 April 2026 while authorities and fuel providers worked to restore normal stocks. The intervention ensured that most commercial operations continued although some short-haul domestic routes experienced tighter controls on fuel uplift.
Italian aviation officials continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate with fuel distributors to avoid further limitations in the coming days. The episode highlights vulnerabilities in jet fuel supply chains at key hubs during periods of elevated global prices. No widespread cancellations occurred at Linate or the other affected airports thanks to the rapid response from alternative providers.
Air BP Italia shared “Due to limited fuel availability from Air BP Italia refuelling services for operators contractually linked to Air BP Italia may be subject to restrictions.”
