Killarney which made history by becoming the first town in Ireland to eliminate all disposable takeaway coffee and tea cups, has won Best Environmental/Ecological award at the LAMA All-Ireland Community and Council Awards.

The Killarney Coffee Cup Project, a joint effort involving local coffee shops, cafes, and hotels, has successfully removed over onem single-use containers from the waste disposal system, with Kerry County Council providing support for the initiative, leading to the town being declared as single-use coffee cup-free.

Judges commended the project for eliminating over 1m single-use cups annually, equivalent to 18.5 tonnes of waste, while emphasizing the promotion of circular economy and sustainable tourism principles for the town’s benefit.

A collaborative endeavour backed by entities such as Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Kerry County Council, and local businesses, the project has not only garnered national recognition but has also contributed to a cleaner environment and positive feedback from residents and visitors alike.
