A new display at the Kilmainham Gaol Museum marks the 100-year anniversary since the last prisoners were held in Kilmainham Gaol between October 1923 and January 1924.
These prisoners included prominent leaders such as Ernie O’Malley, Austin Stack, Peadar O’Donnell, and Éamon de Valera.
When they arrived, many prisoners, including these leaders, were already a week into a 41-day hunger strike.
Éamon de Valera was kept in isolation in the West Wing, separate from other prisoners, while the rest were transferred at the end of January.
Ernie O’Malley was the last prisoner remaining in Kilmainham Gaol and was later moved to St. Bricin’s Military Hospital.
The display showcases remarkable items from the museum collection, including a set of playing cards signed by 22 striking prisoners between 6 and 8 November 1923.
