Laois has been shortlisted for the 2026 European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism Award alongside destinations such as Dubrovnik and Ibiza.

Delegates from Laois County Council will represent the region in Brussels this November for the award competition. Regina Dunne noted that the recognition reflects collaborative efforts in climate action and regenerative tourism within Laois.

Laois showcases innovative projects like the low-carbon town solutions in Portlaoise and the Abbeyleix Bog Project.

The award aims to honour destinations that demonstrate commitment to sustainable and innovative tourism practices across Europe.

Regina Dunne shared, “This recognition shines a light on the inspiring work happening across the county where businesses, community groups, volunteers, and local authority departments have come together to deliver tangible climate action and regenerative tourism initiative. From Portlaoise’s innovative low-carbon town and transport solutions, the many regeneration and development plans in villages and towns across the county, to the restoration and conservation work of the Abbeyleix Bog Project.”
