Data from the National Transport Authority (NTA) shows the number of licensed taxis or Small Public Service Vehicles (SPSV) has fallen since the pandemic in 23 out of 26 counties, with Offaly having 151 taxis in 2023 (down from 184 in 2019) and Laois with 207 licensed taxis (down from 239 in 2019).
The Taxis for Ireland Coalition has expressed concerns over the decreased availability of taxis, stressing the potential negative impact on the hospitality industry and local economies, prompting calls for government support to address the declining numbers and ensure safe travel options for communities.
