The Westminster government has approved London City Airport’s annual passenger cap increase from 6.5m to 9m by 2031.
The airport will be able to fly three extra flights in the first half hour of operations during weekdays.
The planning application was initially rejected in July 2023 due to noise and environmental concerns but was approved by the Government on appeal.
Proposals to extend Saturday afternoon operating hours were rejected, despite the airport’s commitment to using cleaner, quieter aircraft.
CEO Alison FitzGerald said: “I am disappointed with the Government’s decision to reject its Saturday proposals: As the Government has recognised in its decision, rejecting our request to extend our Saturday afternoon operating hours will slow down airlines bringing cleaner, quieter next generation aircraft to the airport. Local residents would have had the added benefit of these aircraft operating at the airport throughout the week, not just in the extended operating hours.”
