London Gatwick has submitted a planning application to use its Northern Runway, responding to the Transport Secretary’s indication of provisional consent on 28 April 2025.

The airport has committed to stricter aircraft noise limits and improved insulation for local residents while working towards a public transport target of 54pc passenger usage.

Gatwick plans to conduct necessary road improvements costing £350m, which could delay the runway’s use should the public transport requirement not be met.

The planned Pier 6 extension, set for completion in 2027, aims to add eight new aircraft gates, decreasing reliance on remote stands and eliminating 12,000 bus journeys annually.

Stewart Wingate, CEO, London Gatwick shared: This project represents a £2.2 billion investment, fully funded by our shareholders and it is essential that any planning conditions enable us to make full use of the Northern Runway. Our plans will create 14,000 jobs and generate £1 billion a year in economic benefits.”
