The Louvre has reopened after one of the most daring art heists in history. Thieves stole eight jewels worth €88m from Louvre Apollo Room on Sunday.

The Louvre reopened on 23 October 2025 after forensic work, with the Apollo Gallery remaining closed amid calls for enhanced security including more CCTV and a police station.

Items include a sapphire diadem, necklace and earring from Queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense, emerald necklace and earrings of Empress Marie-Louise, reliquary brooch, Empress Eugénie’s diamond diadem and corsage brooch.

The emerald-set crown of Empress Eugénie with 1,300 diamonds was dropped and recovered damaged outside the museum. CCTV did not cover entry window and the theft took under four minutes. The gang used a crane to access a second-floor window, smashed two display cases in under four minutes and escaped on motorbikes.

The Louvre director has offered his resignation, but this was refused by culture minister.Laurence des Cars shared “Despite our efforts, despite our hard work every day, we were defeated.”

Gérald Darmanin shared “We have failed.”
