A master plan for oft-photographed Moorehall Estate in Mayo integrates heritage conservation with sustainable tourism development. Burned in wartime, the house was reclaimed by woodland and features regularly on social media because of ispectacular aerial phtography.
The masterplan outlines the future transformation of the historic 18th-century estate and Lough Carra into a nationally designated nature reserve and cultural heritage destination. It proposes restoration of the historic site, reimagining the walled garden, and establishing a visitor centre.
The strategy, developed with Mayo County Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service, and Coillte, aims to designate the area as a nature reserve and cultural destination. Ecological restoration forms a key part of the vision. The plan seeks to enhance public access while preserving historical features.
A major restoration project to preserve the estate and the ruins began in 2023.
