
There have been proposals to rename Kerry Airport in honour of Daniel O’Connell. John O’Donoghue presented the motion at a recent meeting of Kerry County Council, suggesting discussions with relevant authorities regarding the name change.
O’Donoghue mentioned the upcoming 250th anniversary of O’Connell’s birth in August and the strong public support for recognising his legacy.
He noted that the airport could still be referred to as Kerry Airport while honouring O’Connell, similar to how Liverpool Airport is known despite being named after John Lennon.
Daniel O’Connell (1775-1847), born at Carhan near Cahersiveen on August 6, 1775, played an essential role in the Catholic Emancipation Act and was an advocate against the slave trade.
Just one Irish airport has been named after an individual, Belfast City airport war controversially renamed for soccer player and alcoholic George Best in 2006.
