MSC Cruises and Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany have reached an advanced stage in negotiations for four next generation cruise vessels with two options. The partners issued a joint statement on the New Frontier class project. The contract would secure shipyard capacity into the next decade with deliveries scheduled annually from 2030.

Each vessel reaches a maximum passenger capacity of 5,400 at 180,000 tons. Planning for ship design has progressed since the letter of intent in December 2025. The parties expect to conclude contracts in the coming weeks.

The New Frontier class is a next-generation mega-ship platform ordered by MSC Cruises. This brand-new prototype focuses heavily on a superior guest-space ratio, exclusive itineraries, and pioneering eco-friendly propulsion technologies.

The layout of the New Frontier class marks a strategic pivot toward premium passenger comfort. Gross Tonnage is approximately 180,000 gross tons (GT) per ship. Passenger capacity is a maximum of 5,400 guests.

While identical in size to older Meraviglia Plus-class ships (like MSC Grandiosa), these ships will carry nearly 1,000 fewer passengers. This configuration delivers the highest breathing room and best space-per-guest ratio in the entire MSC fleet

While official visual layouts remain highly guarded, industry commentators speculate the ships may leverage Meyer Werft’s visionary “Helix” concept. This design includes a decentralized technical layout, glass pod lounges extending from the bow, and a distinct spiral staircase at the stern to maximize direct sea views.
