A proposed ban on cars driving through Dublin city centre will be in place by August, according to Transport Minister Eamon Ryan.

The Minister said that congestion charges are not part of the measures planned to discourage private car use in busy areas of towns and cities.

Mr Ryan indicated that restrictions on parking and penalties for SUVs, like those in Paris, could be introduced.

A “demand management strategy” aimed at reducing private car journeys will undergo public consultation soon, with a focus on reallocating space to walking, cycling, and public transport instead of relying on congestion charges.

Mr Ryan was speaking as he announced this year’s batch of active travel grants for local authorities to develop walking and cycling projects around the country.
