The Pompeii archaeological park will limit daily visitors to 20,000 and introduce personalised tickets to protect the archaeological site, after a record 36,000 visitors on a free entry day in October.

Nearly four million people visited Pompeii in 2023, a 33pc increase from the previous year and surpassing pre-pandemic levels, prompting concerns about over-tourism and its impact on heritage and visitor safety.

The park’s management aims to distribute tourism more evenly through the “Greater Pompeii” project, promoting visits to associated sites using a free shuttle bus service to reduce pressure on the main site.

Additionally, management is focused on sustainable tourism practices to ensure a pleasant visitor experience while protecting the cultural and historical significance of the site, which remains largely excavated.
