Oneworld has become the first aviation alliance to join the CO2 Connect emissions calculator established by International Air Transport Association (IATA) to enhance the accuracy and quality of airline emission data.
All 13 member airlines of oneworld, including American Airlines, British Airways, and Qatar Airways, will contribute operational data to improve the calculator’s calculations.
written statement says the collaboration aims to provide customers with high-quality estimates of CO2 emissions for their flights, allowing travellers to make more informed choices regarding their carbon footprint. It also supports the industry’s objective of consistency and alignment in CO2 emission calculations.
IATA CO2 Connect currently calculates CO2 emissions for 74 aircraft types, covering approximately 98pc of the global passenger fleet. Industry partners can access the calculations through an API or flat file, as well as through airline sales channels and travel management companies.
In response to traveller expectations, IATA CO2 Connect will evolve to include new features such as corporate reporting solutions, CO2 compensation solutions, and a Cargo calculator to provide accurate emissions data for shippers and freight forwarders.
The CO2 Connect methodology, developed with input from airlines, aircraft manufacturers, and international standard-setting bodies, incorporates factors like fuel measurement, CO2 emissions related to flying activities, non-CO2 emissions, passenger weight, cabin configuration, and carbon offsets and sustainable aviation fuel. It aligns with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
