Projects such as the Kilkee cliff walk in Co Clare, the Traught strand in Galway, and Ballybunion beach in Kerry have been granted funding under the Government’s outdoor recreation infrastructure scheme, amounting to a total of €4.1m to enhance over 150 outdoor recreation projects across Ireland.
Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, announced the funding to develop mountain trails, forest walks, cycleways, rivers, lakes, and beaches, aiming to boost local economies by attracting more visitors to rural communities and supporting sustainable development in the outdoor recreation sector.
Each project under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) will receive up to €30,000, focusing on small-scale enhancements, upgrades, and repairs to improve accessibility and amenities in various outdoor locations.
Other funded projects include the Slí Gaeltacht Mhuscrai in Co Cork, Derryounce Lakes and Trails Trail Upgrade in Co Laois, and the Castleconnell Village Steps in Co Leitrim, reflecting the Government’s commitment to promoting outdoor activities for both health and economic benefits in rural Ireland.
