European airlines lobby group Airlines for Europe (A4E) is urging for a faster transition to greener fuels in aviation.
They are looking to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to establish a global vision for a 4-5pc reduction in CO2 emissions from the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) by 2030.
The EU’s SAF regulation, known as ReFuelEU, recently came into effect, and A4E believes the global industry should follow suit and set achievable targets to promote SAF usage. While Europe’s airlines are confident in meeting the EU’s requirements, global regulations will enhance the sector’s credibility and attract investment.
A4E is also calling for the development of a global framework to stimulate SAF demand and supply. They expect the Third Conference on Aviation Alternative Fuels (CAAF) to deliver a toolkit that covers accounting methodologies for SAF, capacity building, and improved access to finance for SAF.
European airlines are projected to use up to 9 million tonnes of SAF between 2025 and 2030, resulting in saving approximately 30 million tonnes of CO2, equivalent to taking 1.1 million cars off the road annually. Donceel emphasized the need for a global agreement at CAAF/3 to achieve a net-zero aviation industry.
