The proposed pay increases for pilots could cost Aer Lingus between €40m and €45m annually, according to the airline.

Aer Lingus has already faced disruptions due to the ongoing disagreement, losing out on aircraft deliveries from its parent company IAG and its status as the launch customer of the A321XLR.

The Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association (IALPA) is seeking a 24pc pay increase on behalf of almost 800 pilots at Aer Lingus, which would result in significant annual salary boosts for senior captains.

The proposed pay increase of €49,000 for pilots would exceed the basic annual pay of more than 3,500 out of the airline’s 5,000 workers.

The union and Aer Lingus are at an impasse in their pay dispute, with the union balloting for strike action.

Aer Lingus announced an operating profit of €225m for the calendar year 2023, an increase of €168m on the €57m reported in 2022.
