Over €1m has already been invested in refurbishing Dublin’s Natural History Museum, often referred to as the Dead Zoo.
The museum has been closed since September 2022, with repairs expected to take several years to complete.
Many popular exhibits are temporarily relocated to Collins Barracks, providing ongoing public access to select specimens.
The museum removed 10,000 specimens from display to allow investigation of the building and determine what restorative work was needed.
The refurbishment addresses multiple issues, including structural integrity and visitor accessibility.
A team consisting of representatives from the National Museum of Ireland and the Office of Public Works are overseeing the project management and regular evaluations.
The museum was famously described as a museum that should be in a museum by Brendan Behan.
