Roscommon County Council granted planning permission for a 7.8 kilometre greenway on former Bord na Móna lands in townlands of Meelick, Derrymoylin, Cuilbeg, Slattagh More, Dooslattagh, Caul and Cloonmore.

The route follows 5,375 metres of former rail bed, 540 metres of bog headlands and 2,085 metres of machine access routes, with three gateways and two rest points installed.

Features include 3,224 metres of screening, thematic acoustic mirrors and sponges at underpasses, plus upgrades to three agricultural crossings and fencing for safety.

Car, bicycle parking and EV charging spaces provided at locations along the route, addressing three submissions on farm stock concerns from Cloonmore and Tarmonbarry residents.

Bord na Móna received €3.6m from Fáilte Ireland to develop up to 79 kilometres of trails between Tarmonbarry and Roosky, supporting peat phase-out by 2030.

Niall Morrissey shared “We are seeking to continue engagement at the public consultation, and I urge everybody with an interest to attend.”
