Ryanair has purchased 500 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from OMV, an international oil, gas, and chemicals company.

This purchase will save over 1,250 tonnes of CO2 emissions, equivalent to approximately 100 Ryanair flights from Dublin to Vienna.

The agreement extends a previous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the companies, allowing Ryanair to purchase up to 160,000 metric tonnes of SAF from OMV by 2030.

This purchase aligns with Ryanair’s goal of using 12.5pc SAF by 2030 and contributes to the airline and OMV’s shared objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Both Ryanair and OMV are strongly committed to sustainability and are taking various steps to reduce their carbon footprint. Ryanair has invested in a sustainable aviation research center and new eco-friendly aircraft, while OMV aims to become a regional leader in the supply of sustainable aviation fuel. The problem, as Michael O’Leary says repeatedly, is that SAF is virtually unobtainable.
