Ryanair plans to reduce its capacity to and from regional airports in Spain by about one million passenger seats for the winter season.

Eddie Wilson, chief executive of Ryanair DAC, confirmed the reductions are in response to a fee hike from Aena, the airport operator. In January, Ryanair already announced a reduction of 800,000 passenger seats in regional airports for the summer season.

Aena’s fee increase of 6.5pc is aimed at funding expansion projects for the main airports in Madrid and Barcelona.

Ryanair remains the largest airline in Spain based on passenger numbers despite the capacity cuts. Just two regional services to mainland Spain continue from Dublin thorugh winter, Santrander and Seville.
