SAD NEWS: Jim Flannery, former Vice-Chair of Tourism Ireland has died

Jim Flannery, former Vice-Chair of Tourism Ireland, passed away peacefully on April 3rd, 2025, after a remarkable career in the tourism industry.

A graduate of the Shannon College of Hotel Management, he honed his expertise in hotels across Ireland, Germany, and England. As Chief Executive of the Irish Hotels Federation from 1978 to 1988, Jim was a driving force in shaping national tourism policy, advocating tirelessly for the private sector and securing positive changes that strengthened the industry.

In 1988, Jim transitioned to international tourism consultancy, bringing his vision to Africa, the Middle East, the Far East, the USA, and Europe. His work included drafting national tourism plans and establishing tourist boards in countries such as Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Kenya. His strategic insight and commitment to sustainable tourism earned him respect worldwide.

From 2011 to 2016, Jim served as Deputy Chairman of Tourism Ireland, the all-island body responsible for marketing Ireland abroad. His leadership helped elevate Ireland’s global profile, showcasing its rich culture, landscapes, and hospitality to millions of visitors. Colleagues remember him as a collaborative and forward-thinking leader whose warmth and professionalism inspired those around him.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was known for his generosity, wit, and deep love for Ireland Beloved husband of Margaret (Mags, nee Dennehy) and cherished father of Liam, John, Sarah and Ruth, dear brother to Sadie, much loved father-in-law to Orlaith, Karen and Jens. Doted grandfather (Popa Jim) of Anna, Caroline, Amy, Billy, Rachael, Conor, Lara, Louise, Daniel, Lilli and the late James. He will be sadly missed by his wife, sons, daughters, grandchildren, sister, daughters-in-law and son-in-law, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbours.
