Liquids, aerosols and gels can still be left in cabin baggage during screening at Shannon Airport after September 1 regulations changes, the airport has pointed out.

It follows the European Commission’s decision to temporarily reintroduce 100 ml restrictions on liquid, aerosol and gel (LAGs) screening from the 1st of September 2024 at EU airports utilising C3 Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB).

This European Commission directive addresses a temporary technical issue and is a precautionary measure to ensure the continued safety and security of air travel. It is important to note that this measure is not in response to any new threat.

A written statement from Shannon Airport Group said: “at Shannon Airport the safety and security of our passengers and staff are always our top priority. In compliance with the new European Commission directive for EU airports who had introduced the C3 EDSCB technology, we will reintroduce the 100 ml restriction as a temporary measure from 1st September 2024. It is important for our passengers to know that while the 100 ml restriction on LAGs will be temporarily reintroduced, liquids, aerosols and gels can still be left in cabin baggage during screening at Shannon Airport. The current position regarding electronic devices remains unchanged, and electronics such as laptops and phones do not need to be removed from your cabin baggage when flying from Shannon Airport. We are hopeful for a speedy resolution to the technical issues and a return to more flexible liquid allowances and would like to assure passengers that safety and security remain our top priorities.  We will continue to work closely with the European Commission and the Department of Transport to ensure that all security measures are implemented smoothly and efficiently. Passengers are reminded to plan accordingly and from 1st September to ensure that any liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) carried in hand luggage do not exceed the 100 ml limit per container. Exceptions remain in place for essential items such as baby products, special dietary needs, and medications. Further information is available on the Shannon Airport website.”
