Singapore named Destination of the Year at Seatrade Cruise Awards

Singapore Tourism Board has won the Destination of the Year award at the 2016 Seatrade Cruise Awards. The top prize at the event in Tenerife was accepted by STB’s Jason Chan, area director for northern and western Europe.

Other winners at the event – now in its tenth year – included B&A Europe as Supplier of the Year and the Old City Harbour, Tallinn, which won the Environmental Initiative Award. The Port of Southampton was named Port of the Year.

The Seatrade Lifetime Achievement Award for services to cruising was awarded to Erkunt Oner, founder and CEO of Tura Turizm.

The late Giuseppe de Jorio was announced as winner of the Outstanding Contribution Award. De Jorio, who passed away earlier in 2016, was an Italian architect and interior designer with a career spanning 60 years. He worked on the design of 220 cruise ships, ferries and large yachts. His award was accepted by his son, Marco de Jorio, who paid respect to the long legacy of his father.

The Seatrade Personality of the Year Award was awarded to Mehmet Kutman, chairman and CEO of Global Investment Holdings and chairman, Global Port Holding. Starting his career in banking, Mr Kutman moved into tourism and now his company is listed on the Turkish stock exchange and is the world’s largest independent cruise port management company; he also serves on the board of 11 cruise ports and terminals.
