South African Airways requests essential services investigation

South African Airways has requested the Essential Services Committee to investigate classifying pilots, cabin crew, check-in agents, and ground staff as essential services.

The probe followed a formal application from SAA in December 2025. If approved, the classification would restrict the constitutional right to strike for those roles.

Unions including the Airline Pilots’ Association of South Africa opposed the request. The committee began public hearings in four South African cities to examine safety and security aspects.
