Southwest Airlines is to U-turn on its commitment of not operating overnight “red-eye” flights, and is planning 50 such flights per day.

Southwest plans to increase revenue and provide additional service to customers by reintroducing overnight flights over the next few years

The airline is preparing for potential merger if the company decides to acquire another airline due to B737-7 certification delays.

CEO Bob Jordan recalled Southwest’s history of considering opportunities when they make sense, but declined to speculate on industry developments or acquisitions.
