The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued urgent safety recommendations regarding potential issues with the rudder control system on some Boeing 737NG and 737MAX aircraft after investigating a February 2024 incident where a United Airlines airplane experienced “stuck” rudder pedals during landing.
Investigators found that the rudder control actuator from the incident was compromised by moisture due to improper assembly during production, affecting over 353 actuators delivered to Boeing since February 2017.
The NTSB raised concerns about the potential for unintended rudder deflection if pilots apply maximum force to jammed pedals during landing, which could lead to loss of control.
Recommendations from the NTSB included informing pilots of this risk, exploring alternative responses to jammed rudder systems, and possibly removing affected actuators from aircraft until replacements are available.
