Taoiseach Simon Harris has committed to supporting Portmarnock Golf Club’s bid to host The British Open and the AIG Women’s Open, with a financial backing of €40m for necessary infrastructure improvements.
The anticipated timeline for hosting The British Open is 2034, marking the third time the event would take place in Ireland, while the AIG Women’s Open could be held as early as 2029.
Government officials emphasize that hosting these prestigious events would bring significant cultural, economic, and social benefits to Ireland, alongside promoting equality in sports, particularly for women.
Infrastructural enhancements are required for the course, including improving access and modifying some holes; the government calculates a gross economic impact of €338m from these events, with potential ticket sales for The British Open reaching up to 245,000 per event.
