A total of 800 projects, including new walking and cycling routes, bridges, and crossings, have been approved by Minister Eamon Ryan on this year’s active travel grants for local authorities to develop walking and cycling projects around the country.
The allocation for these projects has remained the same as last year, but it may not go as far due to construction inflation.
The number of projects has decreased from 1,100 last year, with some Dublin city councillors expressing dissatisfaction, but the scale of individual projects has increased.
Grants for individual projects range from about €25,000 to €20m to develop a cycle route from Fairview to Amiens Street in Dublin and €10m for further work on the Royal Canal Greenway.
So far, 50 projects have been completed under the scheme developing protected routes for children to walk or cycle to school.
Minister Eamon Ryan said that Dublin and other Irish cities will see cycling become the most common form of transport.
