‘The sustainability of tourism is the sustainability of the world as a whole’

Achieving sustainability in a short period of time is a major concern in the travel industry, the world summit of travel agencies was told in Granada.

Ajay Prakash, TAFI President said “balancing the sector’s development and evolution while taking care of the planet and local communities is essential.”

“We have a responsibility to tourism. Travel is a necessity and will continue to be so. It’s a desire of the population. Therefore, we need to find a balance. The sustainability of tourism is the sustainability of the world as a whole, in global terms. There are the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which are very noble, but how many of them are achievable in a short time?”

Creating tools to calculate and understand the carbon footprint of travel is important in raising awareness and supporting customers to reduce their impact.

Engaging with the public sector and participating in climate conferences is crucial for promoting sustainability in tourism.

Implementing practices such as using electric vehicles, reducing paper usage, recycling, and offering sustainable accommodations can contribute to sustainability efforts.

The tourism industry plays a unique role in connecting people across cultures and realizing that what unites us is more significant than what divides us.

The summit was attended on behalf of the Irish travel Agents Association by CEO Clare Dunne and President Angela Walsh.
