The tragic Jeju air B737-8AS on flight 2216 was leased out of Dublin and owned by SMBC, the world’s third largest aircraft leasing company.

Formerly known as EI-EFR the aircraft flew for Ryanair from 4 Sep 2009 until 24 Nov 2016. It was leased from RBS until June 2012 and from SMBC afterwards. It was ferried from Dublin on 5th February 2017 and commenced serviced with Jeju air on 10 February 2017. It was re-registered as HL8088.

The aircraft was the first of a four aircraft deal to deliver to Jeju Air, with the next delivery scheduled for January 2017. Today’s delivery brings the total number of aircraft on lease to Jeju Air to eight.

This aircraft was also part of a large scale 14 aircraft transition programme, project managed by SMBC Aviation Capital, with all of the modification work undertaken at Dublin Airport.

It crashed 29 December 2024 at Seoul after landing without its landing gear extended. The aircraft failed to stop, crashed into a mound at the end of the runway at high speed and exploded on impact. A total of 179 of the 181 people on board were killed, with just two survivors – both cabin crew.

SMBC has a fleet of 987 total, 500 owned, 216 managed and 271 ordered.
