UN Tourism launches new global guidelines on tourism and rural development
UN Tourism has released a comprehensive set of guidelines aimed at strengthening the role of tourism in rural development worldwide. The document provides practical recommendations for governments, local authorities and tourism stakeholders to harness tourism as a tool for economic growth, job creation and community resilience in rural areas. It emphasises sustainable practices that protect cultural heritage and natural resources while generating income for local populations. The guidelines were developed through extensive consultation with member states and industry experts.
The new framework addresses key challenges facing rural communities including seasonal employment, infrastructure gaps and the need for digital connectivity. It offers tools for product development, marketing and governance models that integrate tourism with agriculture, crafts and other traditional activities. UN Tourism positions the guidelines as a reference for countries seeking to diversify their tourism offer beyond urban and coastal destinations. The launch supports the organisation broader mission to make tourism a driver of inclusive and balanced development.
The guidelines include case studies from different regions to illustrate successful rural tourism models. They also outline monitoring mechanisms to measure social, economic and environmental impacts. UN Tourism encourages member states to adapt the recommendations to their specific contexts and to integrate them into national tourism strategies. This initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to align tourism with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
